George Carlin

Words. That's what George Carlin was all about. Words. Fuzzy language and fuzzy thinking were typical of Carlin's arsenal of topics. He reveled in oxymorons like "military intelligence" and "jumbo shrimp," and pointed out the social uses of euphemism: "When did toilet paper become 'bathroom tissue'? When did house trailers become 'mobile homes'?"
George Carlin took on all taboos, especially religion. "How could the Almighty be all-powerful", stated Carlin, "since "everything he ever makes ... dies"?

Carlin saw the stand-up comic as a social commentator. He challenged conventional wisdom and examined the hypocrisies of middle-class America. He made fun of society being against drugs, for example, showing us that the "drug problem" was in fact, part of middle-class America as well, from coffee freaks at the office to housewives who were hooked on diet pills. He talked about the ridiculousness of Muhammad Ali's banishment from boxing for avoiding the draft — a man whose job was punching and beating people up losing his livelihood because he wouldn't kill people: "He said, 'No, that's where I draw the line. I'll beat 'em up, but I don't want to kill 'em.' And the government said, 'Well, if you won't kill people, we won't let you beat 'em up.' "

Carlin's biggie was the "seven words you can't say on tv," throwing the top seven into his audience's face with the joy of a child and the attentiveness of a social linguist. While the "dirty" words caused a sensation (and prompted a lawsuit that eventually made it to the Supreme Court, resulting in the creation of the "family hour" on network television), his idea was not just to shock, but to question our thoughts on language. Carlin said, "There are no bad words. Bad thoughts. Bad intentions. And woooords."

Later in his career, George Carlin's material grew increasingly dark, to the point where he was pushing (with just the smallest trace of irony) for mass suicide and ecological disaster. "I sort of gave up on this whole human adventure a long time ago," he said a couple of years ago. "Divorced myself from it emotionally. I think the human race has squandered its gift, and I think this country has squandered its promise. I think people in America sold out very cheaply, for sneakers and cheeseburgers. And I don't think it's fixable."

George Carlin pointed out the absurdities of life. He showed us that many things we take seriously are actually being taken too seriously, like ourselves.

Some quotes from the great George Carlin

Religion convinced the world that there's an invisible man in the sky who watches everything you do. And there's 10 things he doesn't want you to do or else you'll go to a burning place with a lake of fire until the end of eternity. But he loves you! ...And he needs money! He's all powerful, but he can't handle money!

I'm completely in favor of the separation of Church and State. My idea is that these two institutions screw us up enough on their own, so both of them together is certain death.

The very existence of flamethrowers proves that some time, somewhere, someone said to themselves, "You know, I want to set those people over there on fire, but I'm just not close enough to get the job done."

Have you ever noticed that anybody driving slower than you is an idiot, and anyone going faster than you is a maniac?

If it's true that our species is alone in the universe, then I'd have to say the universe aimed rather low and settled for very little.
